Brampton Off-Grid Food Shed
The innovative Off-Grid Food Shed is part of City of Brampton’s Backyard Garden Program. It operates in partnership with Brampton Fire & Emergency Services and Nature Harmony Foundation to engage citizens to grow locally, sustainably and in support of food banks.
The Food Shed merges different closed-loop technologies to offer sustainable, year-round agriculture in urban areas. It creatively combines three methods of urban agriculture – aquaponics, hydroponics and soil-based growing – for optimal food production. It is also waste-free.
All waste streams can be converted into soil-enriching amendments through biological means like vermicomposting and a carbon-capturing algal bioreactor. The Food Shed uses immersive urban farming to educate the public on the potential of sustainable, community-based agriculture and approaches to nature therapy. Take the virtual tour below and explore for further learning, activities and lesson plans for Shed visits or at home.
The Food Shed’s broader calling is to contribute to UN’s Sustainable Development Goals and therefore chart a course for a more prosperous, peaceful, and sustainable world. Its operation takes meaningful steps towards Zero Hunger, Wellbeing, Education, Innovation, Responsible Production and Climate Action.
